Lifehouse is the sonic equivalent of a good friend: comforting and dependable. The band fell out of the sky in 2000 with their inescapable single “Hanging by a Moment.” As the group broadened its sound, the quality has remained unusually high. Jason Wade’s vocals snuggle like a warm and comfortable old blanket. Their melancholy music brims with love and loss, hope and regret. Lifehouse doesn’t pretend to know all the answers. But they sure make the questions sound fantastic.
The sparse, acoustic arrangements of Lifehouse’s most recent work provides a wonderful segue for the Bluegrass Tribute to Lifehouse. CMH Records rounded up a group of talented bluegrass musicians and let them transform a handful of Lifehouse standards. Gentle vocal harmonies mix with guitar, mandolin, and dobro to add new levels of emotional nuance that only serve to enhance the lyrics of Jason Wade. This album ably demonstrates that sad songs can make you feel good.
