Little Big Town is the little band that could. This quartet—Kimberly Roads, Karen Fairchild, Jimi Westbrook, and Phil Sweet—has survived personal turmoil and professional hardships. Friends first, the group overcame distressing adversities by turning to their music. Their unique four-part vocals are a refreshing breeze of country cool. After years of missed chances and lean times, Little Big Town finally broke through the country charts with the wistful “Boondocks.”
The southern roots of Little Big Town are exposed on Pickin’ on Little Big Town, a lark of an album. The pop buoyancy at the heart of Little Big Town’s best songs provides a wonderful starting point for a group of great bluegrass musicians. The banjo, fiddle, and dobro “ruralize” such Little Big Town songs as “Pontiac,” “Everything Changes,” and of course, “Boondocks.” Pickin’ on Little Big Town is a big hoot that sounds great in both big cities and little towns.
