It’s been a quick ride to the top of the charts for these boys from Glasgow. One minute you’re playing at your local indie watering hole, the next you’re all over UK & US radio and playing in stadium venues to thousands of adoring fans who know all your lyrics. It’s a familiar story but for a change this band are truly deserving and they have the chops and attitude to back it up. Taking their cue from the angular, post punk, new wave bands of the early eighties they have reinvented and polished up the genre for a new generation and a thousand bands are now trying to follow in their wake.
The energy of Franz Ferdinand's music is nothing if not infectious. That’s why a bluegrass interpretation of their songs seems like such a natural idea. Pickin’ On Franz Ferdinand takes the Scottish art rockers’ tunes and gives them a mountain music spin the likes of which Bill Monroe himself would be proud. Now winners of Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize, I expect Franz Ferdinand will chart a future that defies the legacy of their hapless royal namesake. Long live Franz Ferdinand!
