Carter Falco previously served as rhythm guitarist in Shooter Jennings’ hard rock L.A. band Stargunn. Like Jennings, who provides guest vocals on two tracks, the Texan goes hardcore honky tonk on his debut, without completely bidding rock adieu. The album is quite the accomplished start for Falco, who had a hand in writing 10 of 12 songs.
His laidback, hungover vocals are perfect for songs like “Tattoos and Scars” and “Hello L.A.” a tale of trying to make it in the City of Angels that recalls Charlie Robison’s terrific “Sunset Boulevard.” “That Someone is You” is a fun rave-up that shows off the kick ass backing players supporting Falco. The title track, featuring Jennings, has an undeniably appealing Waylon and Willie together again quality to it. Falco ends the album with a tough, convincing take on Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello’s “Union Song.” A worthwhile listen beginning to end.
